There are several varieties of cockatoos, all of which are a great option as pets, but cockatoos, who are amongst the family of parrots, aren’t the most comfortable birds to keep as pets.

Potential cockatoo owners are attracted to this bird because of how attractive they look but are not aware that cockatoos need plenty of attention, asides the fact that they can be extremely noisy.

Nonetheless, if pet owners don’t mind the downsides of owning a cockatoo, then here are a few famous cockatoos you may be interested in.

Black Palm Cockatoos

Naturally, black palm cockatoos are massive and powerful birds that need the handling of experienced parrot owners. While hand-fed black palm cockatoos make great tame pets, they still need firm training.

These birds shouldn’t be adopted by owners who have little or no experience with keeping large parrots. Black palm parrots need to be handled by bold owners. Their intimidating size and personality are enough to discourage people from adopting them.

Bare-Eyed Cockatoos

If you love all your things “bright and beautiful,” then maybe the bare-eyes cockatoo isn’t for you. The bare-eyed cockatoo is only beautiful on the inside as it has a fantastic personality, but its look might give you the creeps!

The bare-eyed cockatoo is intelligent, sweet and playful, and is surprisingly smaller than other cockatoos. This makes them the perfect cockatoo pets for families with children. They are equally great for pet owners who want an active bird but have small space to accommodate them.

Sulfur-Crested Cockatoos

Large birds like the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are very intelligent and require plenty of exercises. A large is also needed to accommodate this bird if you have an interest in adopting it.

Potential owners should understand that unless these birds are provided adequate exercise and are mentally stimulated, they may resolve to pluck out their feathers and destructive chewing.

To avoid the onset of these behaviors, pet owners must be consistent about providing their pets with attention and plenty of toys.

Citron Cockatoos

Citron Cockatoos are considerably more quiet than most cockatoo species. Their big personalities mean they love to interact and play with their owners. Citron cockatoos are affectionate and very curious.

They also prefer to be by their owners’ side as often as they can. If you plan on keeping a citron cockatoo, then be ready to have your space invaded.

Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos

Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo is a beautiful and intelligent bird. This pitches it among the most sought-after cockatoo. While it is tempting to adopt one of these beautiful birds quickly, specialized care and a conducive environment are needed to house this bird.

Major Mitchell’s cockatoos are mostly recommended for experienced birdkeepers, especially people who have experiences with large parrots.

Umbrella Cockatoos

Hand-fed Umbrella Cockatoos can make intelligent, friendly, and well-behaved pets. For owners who can meet the needs of these beautiful birds, which include space, toys, and attention that most parrots need, Umbrella Cockatoos make great companions.

Some Umbrella Cockatoos are calm enough to be handled by older children. They also make great family pets.

Rose-Breasted Cockatoos

Rose-breasted cockatoos gained popularity among bird lovers with their captivating pink and gray feathers. Their friendly personalities have made these birds the favorite for many parrot owners.

Native to Australia, the Rose-breasted cockatoos have the lifespan of up to 80 years in captivity if kept in good condition.

Also referred to as “galahs,” Rose-Breasted Cockatoos are naturally loud and active. So don’t expect them to be docile or quiet if you intend to keep one as a pet.

Goffin’s Cockatoos

Goffin’s Cockatoos require daily interaction, and they bond strongly with their keepers to maintain a firm mental and emotional health.

You’d be doing more harm than good to your bird if you neglect them. Neglecting a Goffin’s cockatoo would only cause them to be destructive.

Experienced bird owners should handle a Goffin’s Cockatoos due to their personalities, especially since they need plenty of attention.

Slender-Billed Cockatoos

Also known as Long-billed Corellas, Slender-Billed Cockatoos, have since been popular as pets in their native Australia. They are also beginning to win the hearts of other people in other parts of the world.

The needs of a Slender-Billed Cockatoo is very similar to that of its other cousin parrots. They crave human interaction and attention in order to remain mentally, physically and emotionally active

Moluccan Cockatoos

Moluccan Cockatoos are known to be very affectionate birds, and they bond strongly with their owners. Like other parrots, the Moluccan cockatoo thrives on daily interaction.

People who are interested in keeping a Moluccan Cockatoo should be ready for plenty of cuddling. This feathered friend prefers to stay close to their keepers. Similar to the cockatoos on the list, Moluccans require plenty of special time and attention to function properly.

So what do you think? Are you sure you don’t want to own at least one cockatoo? If you already have one, please share some of your experiences with us in the comments below.
